General Music News

Preschool through 2nd Grade

IJP's youngest music students will continue to develope their singing voices this in the second trimester.  We will be learning songs that match the season and learn to sing in both a group and alone.  Our music classroom friends are Hedwig the Owl, Harold the parot and Chanteclare the rooster.  All three help Mrs. Barnick to teach various music class lessons from singing properly to having courage when singing and dancing in class. Each student's progress with matching pitches and voice placement will continue to be assessed throughout the year.  They will be given the opportunity to earn owl stickers to put on their own owl which hangs on Mrs. Barnick's wall in her classroom for accomplishing musical assignments, such as beating a rhythm, matching a pitch, good behavior, cooperative learning, etc. These children are also learning songs which feature ear training, the seasons and movement exploration.  Something else new!  Mrs. Barnick tries to accompany one song each class on her acquired guitar which she learned to play during graduate school last summer.  The children in grades 1 and 2 are also in the beginning stages of identifying the notes of the musical scale through a new program titled "Mr. Everybody's Musical Apartment".  Ask your child to sing their favorite songs from music class!

3rd  and 4th Grade

The third and fourth graders will continue to prorgress in their ability to read music through the more advanced stages of the program "Mr. Everybody's Musical Apartment".  They are learning to both identify notes as well as to write them.  We will be studying intervals (the difference between one note and another) and will learn to discern them by sight on the musical staff as well as by ear.

3rd grade will be doing a xylophone unit, playing songs from "Mr. Everybody" curriculum.  They will also be diving into their orchestra unit in identifying instruments by sight, sound and instrument family.  This will be taught in many creative uses of differentiated learning modules. The wonderful orchestral piece Peter and the Wolf will be studied as well.  The 4th graders will be playing xylophones this trimester.  This is a great begining instrument for piano.  Their orchestra unit will be studying The Nutcracker Suite.  Also, this grade will be creating a poster for their music project.  They will choose an approved instrument and include facts, photos, drawings on a poster that will be presented to the class.  It should be a wonderful musical learning year for both grades.

Please be sure to supply your child with a spiral notebook, a pocket folder and a pencil to be used each week in class.  This is a requirement of music class.

5th through 8th Grade

5th & 6th grades: First trimester starts with a review of what was learned last year which will be the foundation for what is to be learned this year.  5th grade will be studying African drumming; its history, how to play an African drum and compose percussion music by ensemble.  6th will be working on our Orff xylophones, learning to play and compose their own "National Anthem". The second trimester brings equally interesting and fun units for these grades.  5th grade students will be studying the physiology of the singing voice.  These students will be singing both partner songs (songs that fit togehter) and Christmas carols.  They will learn the history of famous classical composers of choral music and also do a project about carols.  6th grade students will be studying the forms of music.  They will review musical symbols and also delve into an American composer unit highlighting Copland, Bernstein and Sondheim.  A fun mini unit will have this grade playing Christmas carols on the uniquie "Boomwhacker" instruments. In the third trimester, 5th grade will be studying the great masters of classical music as well as making their own "land fill" instruments.  The end of the year brings more fun with small groups playing our Boomwhacker instruments.  They will also present a power point about a famous composer.  6th graders will be studying the history of musical theatre and Jazz, purely American genres of music.

7th & 8th grades:  Starting out the year, the 7th graders will be starting with a review of last year's musical knowledge and then move into the history of country and folk music.  The guitar will be studied as well as famous artists of this genre.  The 8th graders will also start in reviewing last year's musical knowledge and then study a history of rock and roll; its unique sound and artists.  They will also compose a simple rock song based on a nursery rhyme.  The second trimester will have these oldest students learning more about music theory.  7th grade students will be studying ear training, the identification of intervals by ear.  They will study folk music and the folk opera Down in the Valley.  This class will be composing a folk tune to go with a nursery rhyme which will be performed for the class.  8th grade will be learning how to identify key signatures and how to sight read music.  They will study popular music: pop rock, hip hop and rap.  The semester will bring their first individual project, writing a rewiew of a popular piece of music.  The third semester is rounded off with 7th grade writing reviews of music (Country) and a musical theatre unit.  8th grade will be diving into musical theatre and jazz and will be viewing and discussing how music imitates life by viewing the musical "West Side Story".

All 6th, 7th and 8th graders will once again be required to attend the Spring Musical on either April 13 or 14.  They will be assigned a writing assignment which can only be completed if they view the show.

Please remind your students to always bring their Chromebooks, spiral notebooks, music folders and a pencils to each class!

PLEASE WATCH POWER SCHOOL FOR ASSIGNMENTS AND DUE DATES!
